Tanya cannot keep a secret. The compulsion has burned inside her since childhood and has cost her every relationship she's had, most recently her engagement. Her new therapist calls it a rare gift and offers an unconventional treatment: a knife, a black candle, and an invitation to sink deeper.
Tanya awakens into a dinner party in Brooklyn, where Marco has carried a folk ritual back from a mountain in Nicaragua and his friends are treating it as a game. The rite belongs to Suyen: a girl taken into a Spanish settlement five centuries ago and rewritten as something evil, whose village destroyed itself over its own whispering. Everyone at the table must give up their darkest secret and leave no memory of ever having carried it.
